D. E. Shaw Research welcomes applications for our summer internship program from undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing degrees in scientific and technical disciplines, including chemistry, chemical or biomolecular engineering, machine learning and other areas of computer science, electrical and computer engineering, applied mathematics, and physics. Some computational research experience and/or programming experience in Python or C/C++ is preferred.
Interns spend 12 to 15 weeks working closely with members of our chemistry and/or computer science teams, and are fully immersed in one of our projects, functioning in a similar capacity to our full-time staff. At the end of the summer, interns have the opportunity to give group-wide presentations of their projects.
Past interns have made meaningful progress on challenging projects, some of which have resulted in advances in our scientific research efforts, development of new machine learning models, or new software and hardware features that are actively used by our team.
Throughout the summer, interns are invited to participate in workshops and a seminar series led by members of our scientific and technical teams, and in lively social programming in and around New York City. We provide our interns with above market compensation and a generous housing allowance.
The expected monthly salary for our internships is $11,700 to $20,600. The applicable monthly salary paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors including the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background.
